How It All Started

The idea for Lumocity began with a passion for aviation and data visualization. Originally, I focused on creating illuminated METAR weather maps for airports, using sectional charts to display real-time weather conditions. However, after discovering that the aviation market was already saturated with similar products, I decided to shift our focus to something just as dynamic—public transit.

As a daily rider of the Chicago ‘L’, I realized that transit maps are often static, providing only a snapshot of the system rather than its real-time movement. I wanted to change that by bringing transit to life, allowing commuters and enthusiasts to see exactly where trains are at any given moment. That’s when Lumocity was born—a company dedicated to merging transit data with illuminated design.

About Me

Hi, I’m Swade Cirata, the founder of Lumocity. I have a background in electrical engineering and graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where I specialized in power systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and embedded systems. My passion for technology extends beyond the classroom—I’ve spent years building and experimenting with home automation, server infrastructure, and real-time data visualization projects. Whether it’s automating lighting systems, optimizing network security, or designing custom hardware, I’ve always been drawn to solving complex problems through engineering.
